In this lecture, diagnostic monitoring and testing of performance in buildings are discussed, as well as impacts upon occupant health, energy use and comfort. In particular, applications of fire performance in buildings are presented.

Recently, the development of stimulus-responsive materials which have dynamic rather than static properties has been attracted great interest. Such materials are able to change their shape, color or porosity in response to environmental changes. In my lecture, a variety of these smart materials will be discussed to meet architectural challenges.
